What is Shiny Object Syndrome?

As an Entrepreneur or Online Marketer I am confident you have experienced Shiny Object Syndrome or SOS for short. You may be unaware of it but once you understand what it is I think you will have an AH HA moment. Let me explain…

First let’s define Shiny Object Syndrome (Objectivius Shinium Syndromus) is defined as the attraction to objects that exhibit a glassy, polished, gleaming or otherwise shiny appearance. Something as simple as a reflection in your peripheral vision may easily distract your attention.

To put this into perspective for those of us that work online it is seeing the newest opportunity, the hottest new product, or anything that catches your attention and distracts you from what you were focused on originally. You may have worked for months or years focused on one goal, or you may have just started on your journey and not yet have the big goal figured out just yet, But you start something new before you can finish or figure out the first thing. You may continue to work on the original while you try to start the new, then you come across another great thing and get interested in it, and this continues until you realize you can not give the time and attention to one specific thing needed to succeed.

Now this is where it gets a little tricky. You have all these “things” on your plate, that if given the proper time and attention can all be successful for you. You do not want to quit or give up on them. So what do you do? Keep being overwhelmed and barley giving each one a fraction of the time they each need? Drop one or two? Drop them all except one?

This decision has to be your own and you must be firm with yourself. Each “thing” deserves your full attention and effort right?  Maybe you go back to the original and throw yourself in head first? Do you delegate things and hire help? Do you walk away from all the work and effort you put in?

Personally I think that figuring out what you are passionate about, and how or if these things could work together is a good start. Only you know what you enjoy doing and what you are good at. So you will want to do a hardcore self evaluation at this point. Once you do this and figure out what you want then you will go thru each of your “things” and see how they fit into what you want to accomplish for your long term goals.

There are step by step processes for these and tons of how-to videos out there on the world wide web.

The purpose of the evaluation process is to highlight strengths, correct performance weaknesses, and develop unused skills and abilities. In order to do this, you must be willing to recognize areas that need improvement or development
A good article to start with is here- https://www.inc.com/encyclopedia/self-assessment.html
Then you can find step by step tips and templates along with examples here- http://templatelab.com/self-evaluation-examples/ as well as an after the assessment exercise.
Try not to go into the self evaluation only picking on yourself. You will need to pat your own back and find your strengths and abilities as well as weaknesses.
Stick around for the next blog post on rabbit holes, and check this out while you wait. It is a resource that can help you bring all your “things” together!
